Over 180 Rwandan students to miss Kampala University graduation
At least 187 Rwandan students will miss the forthcoming Kampala University graduation ceremony in Kampala due to the raging tension between governments of the two neighbouring countries.
Kampala University 16th Graduation Ceremony will take place on 7th March 2019 at the Main Campus in Ggaba.
Rwandan Foreign Affairs Minister Richard Sezibera told a press conference in Kigali yesterday that the government “strongly advises” Rwandans against crossing into Uganda.
Addressing journalists at the Kampala University main campus in Ggaba yesterday, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Badru Dungu Kateregga, said most of the Rwandan students had already communicated to his office they would not attend tomorrow’s graduation ceremony.
“Most students who had gone back to Rwanda will not attend the graduation because they have already communicated to the university management. We pray for them that as the graduation approaches, the situation gets calm,” Mr Kateregga said.
He, however, added that the students will graduate in absentia even if they are unable to attend the ceremony and will receive their academic certificates any time.
THE EVENT
The graduation ceremony will see 3,352 students comprising 2017 males (60.1 per cent) and 1,335 females (39.8 per cent) awarded degrees, diplomas and certificates in diverse academic programmes. Ugandan students are 1,820 while 1,532 are foreigners from Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Somalia, South Sudan, Burundi, Ethiopia and Liberia. The Nabagereka (queen) of Buganda Kingdom Sylvia Nagginda will be the chief guest.
