Over 5 million voters registered in Burundi’s upcoming elections.
This Monday (3 Feb ), the Burundi Independent Electoral Commission(CENI) announced the definitive voters’ list. 5,126,351 Burundians are registered to vote in May 2020 Election. On the electoral roll— 2,688,803 are women and 2,437,548 are men. The diaspora registered 12,933 voters.
Early in December 2019, over 117,000 voters were registered during a partial enrollment that targeted potential voters who were not on the electoral register of the May 2018 referendum elections. Enrollment was also done for the diaspora, Burundians residing in Morocco and Australia got the opportunity to register as well.
The presidential decree convening electors for the presidential, legislative and municipal councilors elections is expected on February 20, 2020, while the one opening the electoral campaign will be scheduled five days after.
For the presidential election, the filing and verification of candidates’ files is scheduled from February 25 to March 5, 2020, while accepted candidacies are to be announced five days later.
According to the electoral calendar, the senatorial election is fixed for July 20, 2020, and that of the hill councilors is scheduled for August 24, 2020.
